Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
    TITLE: Water for Elephants
    AUTHOR: Sara Gruen
    GENRE: Historical Fiction
    PAGES: 331
    RATING: 5/5

SUMMARY: A young Jacob Jankowski leaves college after the tragic death of his family. He jumps onto a passing train, and ends up joining the circus.

MY THOUGHTS: This book was excellent. I loved every minute of it. Although the ending was somewhat abrupt, and I did have a few "what happened to that guy/girl" I truly loved it. This is a must read!

The Virgin Suicides, by Jeffrey Eugenides
    The Virgin Suicides

    Rating: 5/5

Jeffrey Eugenides's hauntingly beautiful masterpiece deserves 5/5 stars. He tells the story of five boys obsessed with the five doomed Lisbon sisters, Therese, Mary, Bonnie, Lux, and Cecilia, whose demise results in "the year of the suicides." Set in the mid-seventies, in Grosse Point, Michigan.

Cecilia's demise begins to break the family apart. But when school hunk Trip Fontaine and Lux Lisbon become interested in each other, it begins to change. Trip asks Lux to the homecoming dance, and her father and mother give in. The remaining 4 Lisbon sisters go to the dance. While on the football field, Trip and Lux make love, and after that Trip abandons her. Mrs. Lisbon takes the girls out of school because of Lux's failure to make curfew. Sightings than begin of Lux making love to random men and boys. The 4 Lisbon sisters make a Morse code to the 5 obsessed boys for them to come over, While there, they discover that Bonnie had hung herself, Therese dead on sleeping pills washed down with gin, Mary's head stuck in the oven (later dead on sleeping pills), and Lux, poisoned by her dad's car fumes.

Jeffrey Eugenides creates a vivid and compelling story, a wickedly funny tale of terror, sex and suicide, memory and imagination.

    The Man Who Invented Christmas
    Les Standiford
    Nonfiction; biography; holiday
    226 pages
    Photobucket
As uplifting as the tale of Scrooge itself, this is the story of how one writer and one book revived the signal holiday of the Western world.
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist.
The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution. It was a harsh and dreary age, in desperate need of spiritual renewal, ready to embrace a book that ended with blessings for one and all.
With warmth, wit, and an infusion of Christmas cheer, Les Standiford whisks us back to Victorian England, its most beloved storyteller, and the birth of the Christmas we know best. The Man Who Invented Christmas is a rich and satisfying read for Scrooges and sentimentalists alike.

Wow, this was such an interesting look at a wonderful author's life. Charles Dickens didn't create Christmas, but he did reinvent it, as Standiford stated. Every year my family read A Christmas Carol, and now every year, I read it before Christmas. I have always loved the story, but now I know the meaning behind the words. Reading such a wonderful biography of Dickens has made me want to read more biographies of famous authors. I am open to any suggestions that my fellow LJers would love to offer. In all, if you are a fan of Christmas, Charles Dickens, and great biographies, then I highly recommend this book!

    Books read this year: 47/50.

Review: Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris, by R L LaFevers
    # 85: Theodosia and the Staff of Osiris by R L LaFevers:

Before I could do a thing about it, Isis [the cat] dropped a small, wet, bedraggled ball of fur onto the toe of Miss Chittle's lovely kidskin boots.

Eyes wild, Miss Chittle looked down at her shoe, shrieked, and, before I could explain it was a peace offering, kicked her foot and flung the poor mouse clear across the room. It struck one of the last remaining mummies smack in the middle of the forehead, then tumbled to the floor.

"I say, good shot, Miss Chittle!" Admiral Sopcoate called out, but she was already running toward the front door.

Synopsis: Precocious 11-year-old girl lives in a museum, thwarts governesses and saves the world. Again.

Review: The Corpse in the Waxworks, by John Dickson Carr
#84: The Corpse in the Waxworks - John Dickson Carr:

A manservant led us into a dim hall, very spacious, panelled in black walnut. It was not shabby, but it needed an airing; it smelled of old wood, of dusty hangings, of brass-polish and waxed floors. Again I caught that scent of clothes and hair, as at the waxworks; but these, I could not help feeling, were the clothes and hair of dead people; and the walls, dark red satin above their panels, exhailed an indefinite reek of decay. We were ushered into a library at the back of the house.

At a mahogany table, on which burnt a shaded lamp, sat Colonel de Martel. At the rear of the room, above tall bookcases, there were diamond-paned windows of blue and white glass. You could see the silver rain thickening, and pale flickers of light were on the face of the woman who sat motionless, her hands clasped, in the shadow of the bookshelves. About them both was an atmosphere of stiff waiting, of tears that would never be shed, and of doom.

Yes, doom. Squeaky, squeaky doom. )

    November books
    1. Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry
    2. The Feast For Crows by George R. R. Martin
    3. The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson
    4. The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell
    5. The Pale Horseman by Bernard Cornwell
    6. The Lords of the North by Bernard Cornwell

Shadows of the Empire was delightfully entertaining, for the dual reasons of it having Boba Fett in it, and that Luke Skywalker wasn't as much of a wuss as he was in the movies

George R.R. Martin's series absolutely enveloped me. Very well written, with a well developed plot and characters. I love reading books when no one is sacred - it makes it all the less predictable, and more realistic, even if it is a fantasy series.

Ah, Stevenson, how you disappointed me. For some reason, I could not get into this book. I've read a few by Stevenson before, but even a battle with pirates on a ship could barely gather my attention. I may try to reread this again at some point - maybe it was just my state of mind, but it was a sore disappointment...

Bernard Cornwell's the Saxon Saga (including the three listed, plus the fourth that I'm reading now, and a fifth one due on in January here in the states... already out in the UK... damn) is very well done. As he's known for his historical fiction, this is no different, telling the story of the Danish invasion of England from the viewpoint of a Saxon raised to be a Danish warrior. I love the characters, and his battle discriptives. It makes me want to jump out of the seat and join him in the shield wall. In all, very well done and I will be looking into his other series'.

Review: Wodehouse's Bestiary, by PG Wodehouse
    # 83: Wodehouse's Bestiary by PG Wodehouse:

"Ladies, ladies!" I said. "Ladies, ladies, ladies!"

It was rash. Looking back, I can see that. One of the first lessons life teaches us is that on these occasions of back-chat between the delicately-nurtured a man should retire into the offing, curl up in a ball, and imitate the prudent tactics of the opossum, which, when danger is in the air, pretends to be dead, frequently going to the length of hanging out crepe and instructing its friends to stand round and say what a pity it all is. The only result of my dash at the soothing intervention was that the Pyke turned on me like a wounded leopardess.

Synopsis: A nice collection of animal-themed stories nearly guaranteed not to freak out those usually fruck out by animal-themed stories.

It is so a word. )
